5 out of 5 stars Over 400 Pages of Detailed Illustrations   November 24, 2008
From Front Jacket:

"At the end of the 19th century the German architect Alexander Speltz undertook a mammoth project to collect in one book illustrations and information representing the entire range of the world's ornamental styles over a period of 6,000 years. Speltz's work, 'Styles of Ornament,' has become a classic of architectural and design history.

The thousands of drawings of decorative details were sketched directly from objects and architecture of the various cultures. Examples of the designs from the ancient world include Egyptian, Greek, Estruscans, and Pompeiian ornament. Frankish, Moorish, Chinese, Romanesque in Scandanavia, and Gothic in Germany and Austria are among the styles of medieval ornament that are depicted. Also included are samples of Italian Renaissance ornament, French Rococo ornament, American Colonial-style ornament, and German Biedermeier-style ornament.

'Styles of Ornament' gives the modern reader the opportunity to see numerous examples of decoration from a particular culture and period, and immediately identify them by referring to the accompanying group of captions. In addition, a brief historical overview introduces each section.

The book is arranged chronologically by historical period and artistic style, and then by country of origin. There are 400 pages of illustrations; each page usually has ten or more clear and detailed black-and-white drawings, which are keyed to the captions."
