From the supplier: The confocal acoustic microscope, composed of transverse and longitudinal components, helps examine fiber/matrix interfaces and reveals the relation between interface degradation and microstructure of the ceramic fiber composites. The interference fringes in the acoustic micrographs reveal the cracks and interface degradation properties due to heat treatment. The spacing of these interference fringes yields quantitative data regarding the elastic characteristics of the matrix and fiber interfaces.
