Advanced ceramics are often exposed to very aggressive operating conditions. The improvement of such materials, and innovations in their production and processing methods are the driving forces behind the development of many industrial processes. This monograph reviews the current scientific understanding of the processes which are involved, and analyzes composition-structure-property relationships for highly corrosion-resistant materials such as: alumina; mullite; silicon carbide and siliconized silicon carbide; silicides; and composites of the above.
