Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When Julian Harrison Toulouse's Fruit Jars was published in 1969, it was called "remarkable," "scholarly," "encyclopedic," and the "definitive book on fruit jars and seals." Reviewers then looked forward to more reference material like it.

With the same finesse of detail, Dr. Toulouse, in this reprinted classic work, brought the finitely evolved world of the bottle makers into sharper focus.

Collectors are not only able to date their bottles, but they may learn the often fascinating histories of the glass companies that produced them. Bottle collectors knew the author as an astute researcher; in this work he gathered over 900 older marks and more than 300 modern marks, handlettered for the most part, to better convey the actual markings on the bottle.

The markings are organized into a dictionary-like format, with extensive cross-references, to facilitate quick identification of collectors' bottles by their marks. Dates, company histories, and human interest vignettes included in the listings combine to make bottles much more rewarding to possess and collect. There is also a section on foreign marks to make this guide as complete as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Best in its class!   April 13, 2006

This book is famous amongst archaeologists and historians. It is absolutely the best organized and most complete book for researching the ages and histories of bottles. Great for anyone serious about glass research, but not for the casual observer. This book was, or is? long out of print but worth the money you'll pay.

As an ethical note, bottle collecting on federal land is, believe it or not, a felony! The dates that come from bottles, thanks to the precious and rare marks and styles, are a critical element of archaeological research. PLEASE! Use this book responsibly. Enjoy bottles, they're beautiful, but don't remove them from historic places unless you own the property or have direct permission from the owner! Thanks!!
