Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This illustrated historical overview features some of the finest examples of Cherokee art in private, corporate, and museum collections here and abroad. As Susan C. Power ranges across the rich legacy of Cherokee artistic achievement from the sixteenth century to the present, she discusses such objects as baskets, masks, beaded and embroidered garments, jewelry, and paintings. Power draws on archival and scholarly sources and, when possible, the artists' own words as she interprets these objects in terms of their design, craftsmanship, style, and most important, their function and meaning in Cherokee history and culture.

In addition to recognizing artistic merit and significant contributions to the development of Cherokee art, Power reveals the wide range of geographical locales from which Cherokee art has originated. This includes the Cherokee's tribal homeland in the Southeast, the tribe's areas of resettlement in the West, and places in the United States and beyond to which individuals subsequently moved. Intimately connected to the time and place of its creation, Cherokee art changed along with Cherokee social, political, and economic circumstances. The entry of European explorers into the Southeast, the Trail of Tears, the American Civil War, and the signing of treaties with the U.S. government are among the transforming events in Cherokee art history that Power discusses.

In the twentieth century, as Cherokee artists joined the mainstream art world, they helped shape the Native American Fine Art Movement. Today, Cherokee artists continue to create in an artistic voice that is uniquely Cherokee-a voice that is both traditional and contemporary.

3 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Jewel   January 3, 2009
The first chapter has indepth narratives of artforms including succinct descriptions of the peaks of various artforms. There are some bright jewels of information that I've not read in other sources. However, much of the narrative is done in technical writing style. Examples of a particular artform are cited as if Ms. Power was writing a technical paper. You would have to obtain obsure references or view unattainable artifact collections to see what she is talking about and to receive the total benefit and enjoyment from this book. There appears to be confusion on the author's part as to whether she's writing a technial paper or one that a person interested in American Indians can thoroughly enjoy. She leaves the serious reader frustrated and thisting for pictures, line drawings, photographs - anything to illustrate the technical terms and examples of a particular artform she describes. The pre-Columbian/early contact art is what folks are least familiar with and Ms. Power doesn't help improve this by omitting visuals. Although this area may be illustrated in the companion book Art of the SE Indians, a reader shouldn't have to go to the citations or buy the companion to see general examples. As the book goes on, the illustrations get better - but it's of artwork people are more familiar with - the modern baskets and flat art. The book reviewers were all anthro and art professors - apparently the audience she was writing for who liked her technical writing. The book appears less written to acquaint regular people with this complex art than to meet a checkoff on her University tenure tract. Ms Power, this is an art book meaning one expects it to be rich in visuals. This book was well worth the money, but left me wanting so much more that could have easily been included.

2 out of 5 stars Art Of The Cherokee   December 16, 2008

For this book to be 295 pages long, and to have in its title art from pre-history to the present, is a joke. It is a total waste of paper. very few pictures are in this book and what is being called pre-history art, Ms Power should be ashamed. I wasted my money purchasing this junk.....
you got two stars for the colorful cover

disapointed in cherokee georgia

From both a pictorial view and a written view, this is one of the best books available on the subject.
Money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for Indian art enthusiasts   March 9, 2007

This book does a wonderful job of capturing the breadth and depth of Cherokee art and craft, neatly presenting it within a broader, cultural context. I highly recommend this book to Indian art historians, art collectors, and anyone with a passion for Cherokee culture.
